Senior Software Engineer - java backend developer
Location: Vancouver, Canada
Duration: 12+ Months, with potential for extension
Work Arrangement: Hybrid – 3 days onsite per week

Seeking a Senior Software Engineer with strong hands-on coding, problem-solving, and system design experience to join a high-performing engineering team building scalable, cloud-ready applications.
The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Java backend development, experience designing high-performance systems, and the ability to clearly explain technical decisions, architecture, and project contributions. This role is highly hands-on and offers the opportunity to work on critical, large-scale technology initiatives involving cloud migration, AI-driven solutions, and real-time decisioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain high-performance backend services using Java.
- Build applications using frameworks and technologies such as Spring and gRPC.
- Take ownership of assigned technical components and ensure solutions are production-ready.
- Participate in architecture and system design discussions and help drive technical decisions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional and engineering teams to understand requirements and deliver solutions.
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins.
- Work with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerized application deployments.
- Contribute to cloud migration and cloud-readiness initiatives.
- Conduct code reviews and promote engineering best practices and coding standards.
- Develop automated testing and deployment processes to improve reliability and efficiency.
- Troubleshoot complex technical issues and provide effective, scalable solutions.
- Mentor other engineers while remaining actively involved in coding and technical design.
Required Qualifications
- Strong hands-on programming experience with Java.
- Solid knowledge of Spring Framework and gRPC.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Experience with unit testing and mocking frameworks, such as JUnit, Mockito, or EasyMock.
- Strong knowledge of SQL and experience with relational databases, preferably Oracle.
- Experience developing and supporting high-performance applications.
- Strong understanding of software architecture and system design.
- Experience with REST API testing and automation tools such as Rest Assured.
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or PCF.
- Exposure to front-end technologies such as Angular is a plus.
- Strong debugging and problem-diagnostic abilities.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work effectively within an Agile/Scrum environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
