Senior Firmware Engineer – Motor Control
📍Reading – Onsite

🛡️ Permanent | UK Defence & Autonomous Systems
We're working with a business developing sovereign technology for the autonomous systems market.
They're designing and manufacturing their products in-house in the UK, with a particular focus on technology that will ultimately sit within UAVs and other intelligent systems.
They're now looking for a Senior Firmware Engineer to take real ownership of the embedded software behind their motor controllers.
This is a hands-on engineering role working close to the hardware, developing bare-metal firmware for three-phase brushless motor control rather than simply configuring existing vendor stacks.
What you'll be working on
- Bare-metal C/C++ firmware
- BLDC / three-phase motor control
- Field-Oriented Control (FOC)
- Six-step commutation
- Real-time control loops
- STM32 microcontrollers
- CAN / DroneCAN / UAVCAN
- Bootloaders & secure firmware updates
- Hardware bring-up and debugging
- Potential future migration towards RTOS / model-based development
We're particularly interested in engineers who have personally designed and shipped motor-control firmware, ideally from the ground up.
You'll be joining at the right time - ideas are there sure, but there is real chnace for you to put your name to products and processes from day one! The gap they are plugging has 'future unicorn' potential. It would perfectly suit someone who is ecited by that idea and is happy in a fast paced and initially unstructured environment.
If you've worked on motor drives, ESCs, BLDC/PMSM control, robotics, electric propulsion or other high-performance embedded control systems, I'd be keen to speak.
