About Snowy
Snowy Hydro is a dynamic, integrated energy business that has been providing on-demand, reliable energy to Australia for generations. Snowy Hydro owns and operates a powerful combination of generation assets, including the mighty Snowy Mountains Scheme, gas and diesel plants, and contracted wind and solar energy.
We also provide electricity and gas to over 1.5 million retail customers through our retail brands Red Energy and Lumo Energy. Snowy 2.0 is Australia's largest committed renewable energy project. This nation-building project will provide on-demand energy and large-scale storage for many generations to come.
About The Position
We are seeking a hands-on Data Engineer to join our Platform Engineering and Data Ops team in our Enterprise Data function on a 12-month fixed-term contract. This technical role is responsible for designing, building, and testing core data pipelines across our Enterprise Data Platform.
In this role, you will focus on implementing Medallion architecture using Snowflake. You will build native integrations for core enterprise systems like SAP and ServiceNow, embed modern data quality, testing, and CI/CD deployment practices, while leveraging AI-assisted coding agents (e.g., Copilot, Snowflake native AI capabilities, Cursor) to accelerate development, data modeling, and documentation
Key Responsibilities
- Medallion Architecture & Data Ingestion: Build end-to-end Medallion pipeline architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold), utilising open data formats such as Iceberg. Design and implement resilient native pipelines to connect into core enterprise systems, including SAP and ServiceNow. Collaborate closely with Data Governance, Data Architecture, and Reporting & Analytics teams to translate business intent into reusable data assets.
- Data Modeling & CI/CD Production: Design, build, and test enterprise-grade data models using Snowflake-native capabilities, Python and SQL. Manage the end-to-end lifecycle of moving data models from development through testing into production using automated CI/CD pipelines.
- Data Governance, Privacy & Pipeline Standards: Implement data quality validations, dynamic security controls, masking, and pipeline observability with automated alerting for failure detection. Develop automated unit, integration , and regression tests for data pipelines.
- AI-Assisted Engineering & Innovation: Using AI coding agents (e.g. GitHub Colpilot, Cursor, Snowflake native AI features) with appropriate guardrails, prompt context, and rules to accelerate code wiring, data modelling, unit testing, and documentation generation.
About the location:
This role is based in Sydney.
About You
- Snowflake & Core Engineering Expertise: Deep hands-on experience in Snowflake environments (virtual warehouse optimisation, performance tuning) with expert level proficiency in Python and SQL for data transformation and modelling. Knowledge of Matillion is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Enterprise Source Integration & Architecture: Proven track record of constructing Medallion architecture layers (Bronze, Silver, Gold) and setting up native connectors to ingest raw data from core enterprise systems such as SAP and ServiceNow.
- CI/CD, Governance & Observability: Hands-on experience deploying data models through staging and production using Git and automated CI/CD pipelines, whilst embedding data quality validations, pipeline observability, and automated alerting.
- AI Guardrails & Tooling: Practical experience using AI coding assistants to build, test and document data models, along with the ability to define prompt context, rules, and governance guardrails.
- Business Acumen & Industry Experience: Strong business acumen to understand domain context, translate business goals into relevant and compliant data models, and ensure end-to-end utility. Background in a fast-paced or regulated industry (such as Financial Services, Energy, or Utilities) is highly regarded.
