Role Description
We are looking for an experienced CAD Drafter / Cabinetry Draftsperson to provide project-based drafting support to a joinery and cabinetry business in Queensland, Australia.
The successful candidate will receive rough sketches, measurements, and project requirements from the client and transform them into accurate, practical cabinetry drawings and cutting lists that can be used for production.
Projects will primarily involve kitchens, walk-in wardrobes/robes, vanity units, and other custom cabinetry.
The client currently uses SketchUp and would prefer someone who can work within this platform so drawings can easily be reviewed, modified, or adjusted internally.
Key Responsibilities
- Convert rough sketches and concepts into accurate cabinetry drawings.
- Produce detailed drawings suitable for manufacturing and installation.
- Prepare accurate cutting lists for cabinetry projects.
- Draft kitchen cabinetry and layouts.
- Draft walk-in robes and wardrobe systems.
- Draft bathroom vanity units and other custom cabinetry.
- Interpret measurements, dimensions, specifications, and client requirements.
- Make revisions to drawings based on feedback.
- Ensure drawings are practical and suitable for fabrication.
- Maintain accuracy across dimensions, materials, components, and specifications.
- Deliver completed drawings within agreed project timelines.
- Communicate any missing information or potential design issues before finalising drawings.
CNC File Preparation – Highly Desirable
Candidates who can take completed cabinetry drawings through to CNC-ready production files will be highly regarded.
This may include:
- Preparing files for CNC machining.
- Generating G-code, NC files, or other CNC-compatible outputs.
- Ensuring files are correctly prepared for manufacturing.
- Checking dimensions and machining information before files are released for production.
Requirements
- Previous experience as a CAD Drafter, Cabinetry Draftsperson, Joinery Drafter, or similar role.
- Strong experience drafting cabinetry or joinery projects.
- Experience producing drawings for kitchens, wardrobes, vanities, or custom cabinetry.
- Proficiency in SketchUp is highly preferred.
- Ability to interpret rough sketches and convert them into professional technical drawings.
- Experience preparing accurate cutting lists.
- Strong understanding of cabinetry construction and manufacturing.
- Excellent attention to detail and dimensional accuracy.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Strong communication skills and ability to clarify requirements when needed.
- Ability to complete projects within agreed turnaround times.
Highly Desirable
- Experience preparing CNC-ready files.
- Knowledge of G-code and/or NC files.
- Previous experience working with Australian cabinetry or joinery businesses.
- Understanding of Australian cabinetry and joinery practices.
- Experience working remotely with trades-based businesses.
- Portfolio demonstrating previous cabinetry and joinery drafting work.
Work Arrangement
This position will initially operate on a project-by-project basis rather than fixed weekly hours.
The expected workload is approximately one to two projects per week, depending on business requirements.
For each project, the drafter will review the requirements and provide an estimated number of hours for completion. Once approved, the work can proceed.
There is potential for the volume of work and hours to increase as the business grows.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a practical cabinetry drafter who understands both design and production.
We are looking for someone who can take a relatively simple rough sketch from the client and independently turn it into something that is accurate, usable, and ready for the next stage of production.
Someone with strong SketchUp, cabinetry drafting, cutting list, and CNC preparation experience would be particularly well suited to this role.
