About Pharmaceutech
Pharmaceutech, a UK-based start-up health tech research and development company, that builds technology to provide clinical teams with earlier and more objective insights into patient health. Our products, including software and medical devices, address pressing health issues and modernise real world medicine management beyond clinical trials.
We combine biosensing, wearable hardware and AI to turn real physiological and biochemical signals into decision support clinicians can act on, in areas of serious unmet need in healthcare. We have recently secured funding to take our lead platform from proof of concept to a clinically validated system over the next two years.
That work is OpiBud: a wearable patch for monitoring opioid use disorder and flagging early relapse or overdose risk. This role sits within a small, multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists working together toward shared research goals. You would be contributing your expertise as part of that team, at an early and hands-on stage, on problems that do not yet have a fixed answer. All research, models and intellectual property developed in the role belong to Pharmaceutech Ltd.
Your responsibilities
- Working with the firmware, AI and clinical members of the team, you will contribute to:
- Designing and prototyping the body-worn patch, working to a compact, low-mass, skin-worn form factor
- Integrating microneedle biochemical sensors with physiological sensors (heart rate variability, temperature, movement) into a single device
- Developing the analog and mixed-signal front end that turns noisy biological signals into clean, usable data
- The device's power architecture, a key design constraint for a continuously worn device, working toward a rechargeable solution
- Shaping the MVP sensing strategy, prioritising a focused, achievable analyte set over a broad panel in the first build
- Microneedle integration, alongside our fabrication partners
- The design history and technical documentation needed for medical device development
Qualifications
A degree in electronic engineering, biomedical engineering, physics or a closely related field. A relevant MSc or PhD, or equivalent hands-on device development experience, is an advantage
Essential experience
- Proven hardware development from prototype to working device, ideally wearable or medical
- Strong analog and mixed-signal design, including signal conditioning for low-level sensor signals
- Sensor integration experience across multiple sensing modalities
- Comfort with low-power design and the trade-offs it forces
- A prototyping mindset: happy to build, test, break and iterate quickly
Highly desirable
- Biosensing, electrochemical or microneedle sensing background
- Experience developing under a medical device quality system (ISO 13485, ISO 14971)
- Familiarity with wearable form-factor and skin-contact design constraints
Salary is £45,000 for 2 years with a contracted increase after.
