Role 1: QA Automation Lead Engineer
The QA Automation Lead Engineer is a hands-on player-coach. This is not a formal people-management role. The Lead will actively develop and debug automation, coordinate day-to-day priorities, delegate tasks to the two QA Automation Engineers, review technical outputs, and act as the primary QA contact within the delivery team.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, execute, and maintain automated test scripts using Playwright, Selenium, BDD Cucumber, Rest Assured, and related tools.
- Create, enhance, and troubleshoot automation frameworks for web, API, regression, system integration, and end-to-end testing.
- Delegate testing and automation tasks across the three-person QA team based on sprint priorities, skills, and delivery needs.
- Provide hands-on technical guidance, perform code reviews, and promote practical coding and test automation standards.
- Collaborate with the Product Owner, Scrum Master, developers, and business stakeholders to clarify requirements, risks, acceptance criteria, and test coverage.
- Coordinate with offshore development and automation resources, including teams in India, to align execution and resolve technical issues.
- Support test planning, estimation, test data preparation, defect investigation, defect reporting, and release readiness.
- Integrate automated tests into GitHub-based CI/CD pipelines so testing is executed as code is deployed.
- Validate interfaces, data flows, and dependencies across legacy and modernized components.
- Use AI-assisted tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Playwright MCP, or other relevant MCP tools to improve productivity and maintainability.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on QA automation or SDET experience, including experience coordinating technical work across a small team.
- Strong hands-on Playwright experience is highly preferred; strong Selenium experience is also required.
- Ability to independently create scripts, debug automation failures, and build or significantly update automation frameworks.
- Programming or scripting experience in Java, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
- Experience with API testing, database validation, and tools such as Rest Assured.
- Experience with GitHub, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, or comparable version control and delivery platforms.
- Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, Jenkins, Azure DevOps Pipelines, Docker, and continuous testing concepts.
- Experience designing and executing system integration, end-to-end, overall system, functional, and regression testing.
- Experience working in Agile or SAFe delivery environments.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work with both technical teams and business stakeholders.
Role 2: QA Automation Engineer
The QA Automation Engineers will be hands-on team members responsible for building and executing automated tests, supporting sprint and release testing, investigating failures, and validating business-critical workflows across connected applications and services.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain automated UI, API, regression, integration, and end-to-end tests using Playwright, Selenium, Cucumber BDD, Rest Assured, and related tools.
- Create test scripts independently and contribute to framework enhancement and maintenance.
- Work with developers to identify defects and regressions early in the delivery lifecycle.
- Participate in requirement clarification, test design, estimation, acceptance criteria review, test data creation, execution, and defect management.
- Execute both automated and manual testing where automation is not practical or not yet available.
- Analyze test reports, debug script failures, investigate application issues, and create clear defect reports.
- Validate interfaces and data movement across multiple components through system integration and end-to-end testing.
- Contribute automated tests to CI/CD pipelines and support continuous testing during deployment.
- Collaborate effectively with Japan-based business stakeholders and global development and offshore teams.
- Continually improve automation coverage, test reliability, maintainability, and testing efficiency.
Required Qualifications
- At least 3-4 years of hands-on QA automation experience.
- Hands-on experience with Playwright is highly preferred, with practical Selenium knowledge.
- Ability to create and debug automation scripts using Java, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
- Exposure to automation frameworks, including framework maintenance or enhancement.
- Experience with functional, regression, API, system integration, and end-to-end testing.
- Experience with GitHub or similar version control tools and a working understanding of CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with database development or validation tools and test data creation.
- Working knowledge of Agile or SAFe delivery, including requirements, estimation, defect priority, and sprint execution.
- Strong collaboration, troubleshooting, and stakeholder communication skills.
Key Deliverables and Goals
- Establish and maintain reliable automated test coverage for critical web, API, integration, and end-to-end business flows.
- Bring automation into sprint delivery rather than treating it only as a post-development activity.
- Create and maintain test cases, test data, automation scripts, frameworks, and execution reports for new and existing functionality.
- Implement automated test execution within CI/CD pipelines and contribute to appropriate quality gates.
- Validate the connections and interfaces between legacy applications, modernized components, databases, APIs, and downstream services.
- Reduce avoidable manual regression effort while retaining manual testing for scenarios where automation is not appropriate.
- Provide clear visibility of quality risks, defects, test results, and release readiness to delivery and business stakeholders.
- Continuously improve framework capability, automation reliability, testing efficiency, and use of modern AI-assisted tools.
Performance Expectations
- Become productive quickly and begin contributing meaningful test design and automation within the initial onboarding period.
- Deliver maintainable, reusable, and reviewable automation code aligned with agreed team standards.
- Complete committed testing and automation activities within sprint and release timelines.
- Demonstrate the ability to independently create scripts, debug failures, and resolve routine framework or execution issues.
- Engage early with requirements and identify missing acceptance criteria, integration risks, test data needs, and testability concerns.
- Balance automated and manual testing based on risk, repeatability, business impact, and delivery needs.
- Communicate clearly across the Product Owner, business stakeholders, developers, Scrum Master, and offshore teams.
- For the Lead: coordinate priorities, delegate tasks effectively, remove day-to-day blockers, and remain a strong hands-on technical contributor.
