Staff Accountant
Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to support our commercial real estate accounting team. The role focuses on CAM (Common Area Maintenance) reporting and budgeting, lease abstracting, and day-to-day accounting tasks to ensure accurate financial reporting and efficient property management accounting. The ideal candidate will have solid accounting fundamentals, hands-on experience with CAM processes for commercial properties, and the ability to communicate financial results to property and operations teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and manage monthly CAM reconciliations and reporting for commercial properties, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery to property owners and tenants.
- Develop and maintain CAM budgets, prepare variance analyses, and support budget forecasting for property portfolios.
- Perform lease abstracting and maintain lease databases, extracting key financial terms, critical dates, and responsibilities to support accounting and property management.
- Record and reconcile general ledger transactions related to property operations, tenant billings, rent, recoveries, and CAM allocations.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and schedules in accordance with company policies and GAAP.
- Coordinate with property managers, asset managers, and third-party vendors to obtain supporting documentation and resolve discrepancies.
- Assist with audit preparation and provide support for external auditors as needed.
- Support accounts receivable and accounts payable processes tied to property operations, including tenant invoicing and vendor payments.
- Continuously improve accounting processes and controls related to CAM reporting and lease administration.
- Utilize accounting systems to maintain accurate property and tenant records and produce management reports.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred or equivalent work experience.
- 2+ years of accounting experience, preferably in commercial real estate or property management.
- Demonstrated experience with CAM reporting, CAM budgeting, and reconciling CAM accounts.
- Experience with lease abstracting and familiarity with common commercial lease terms and structures.
- Strong general ledger accounting skills, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple properties and deadlines.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel and comfortable working with accounting software; experience with Yardi is a plus.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally with property and operations teams.
- Knowledge of GAAP and basic tax/tenant charge concepts related to property operations.
