About us
Anytime Fitness Barking opened its doors in November 2025, and our first year has been about one thing: building a club the local community actually wants to belong to. We've invested in state-of-the-art equipment and a space that feels genuinely welcoming — but the kit is the easy part. What sets a club apart is how it feels to walk in.
We're growing, and we fully intend to keep growing. But we're clear about how we'll do it: by obsessing over the member experience, by knowing people's names and their goals, and by building a culture members want to bring their friends into. We're looking for an ambitious Assistant General Manager who believes the same thing — that the best growth strategy any club has is being a club people love.
About the role
As Assistant General Manager, you are the club's commercial engine and the guardian of how it feels to be a member here. Working closely with the General Manager, you'll lead membership sales, own the onboarding and retention activity that keeps members with us, take an active role in the club's social media presence, and deputise for the GM when they're not on site.
This is a hands-on leadership role, not a desk job. You'll be on the gym floor running tours, picking up the phone, greeting members by name and noticing the small things — the machine that needs attention, the bench that hasn't been wiped down, the member who hasn't been in for a fortnight. You'll set the tone for the team, and they'll take their standard from yours.
We want someone who is competitive about growth and obsessive about experience — because in this club we think those are the same thing. If that sounds like you, there is real room to grow here.
What you'll do
Sales and lead generation
- Drive membership sales across the full cycle — enquiry, tour, consultation, close and follow-up.
- Own daily lead flow and pipeline discipline through the club's CRM, so no enquiry goes cold.
- Hit and exceed monthly membership and secondary-spend targets, and help the team hit theirs.
- Convert walk-ins, referrals and digital leads, and build a referral habit into every member conversation.
- Support the delivery of club revenue and membership growth targets alongside the General Manager.
Member experience and club culture
- Set the tone for how this club feels — welcoming, high-energy and genuinely inclusive, from someone's first visit onwards.
- Deliver first-week and first-month onboarding so new members start well and stay.
- Be a visible, active presence on the gym floor — know members by name, understand their goals, and solve problems before they become complaints.
- Build the member community through challenges, events, socials and the everyday touches that turn a gym into somewhere people belong.
- Proactively manage arrears, renewals and cancellations to protect recurring revenue.
- Run save and win-back conversations with empathy and without a script.
- Act on member feedback, reviews and survey scores, and close the loop with the people who raised them.
Operations and duty management
- Act as Duty Manager and take responsibility for the club in the General Manager's absence.
- Hold the club to the standards members notice — cleanliness, presentation, working kit and a floor that is always ready.
- Own health, safety and compliance on shift — checks, incident reporting, and a club that is safe 24/7.
- Manage stock, rotas and day-to-day club admin so the operation runs without friction.
Team leadership
- Lead by example, and coach, motivate and develop the team to hit their own objectives.
- Recruit, induct and retain a team that reflects the culture you're building.
- Monitor and report weekly on the club's KPIs — leads, joins, attrition, member engagement and operational standards.
Social media, brand and local growth
- Take an active role in the club's social media strategy and its day-to-day execution — planning content, capturing it on the floor, posting consistently and replying to everyone who engages.
- Use our channels to show the club as it actually is: member stories and milestones, the team's personalities, the atmosphere at 7am on a Monday — not just offers.
- Work with our marketing agency to maximise campaign performance and lead quality.
- Build the club's local presence through partnerships, corporate tie-ups, events and community outreach across Barking and the surrounding area.
What you'll bring
Essential
- A proven track record of hitting and exceeding sales targets, in fitness, hospitality, leisure, retail or another customer-facing environment.
- A genuine obsession with customer experience — you notice the details others walk past, and you care how a place feels, not just how it performs.
- Confidence leading from the front — you enjoy developing and motivating people, not just managing them.
- Comfort working to KPIs, targets and performance metrics, and reporting on them honestly.
- Confidence creating and posting social media content, and the willingness to be on the floor capturing it.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, and the ability to read a room.
- Highly organised, with genuine attention to detail.
- A positive, energetic, professional approach, and flexibility to work varied hours including evenings and weekends.
- Tech-confident — comfortable with CRM and club management systems and the reporting that comes with them.
Desirable
- Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification, or working towards it.
- Previous experience in a health club or gym environment, and familiarity with membership management software.
- Experience running a brand or business social media account, and comfort with basic content editing tools.
- Knowledge of the Barking and East London market, and existing local networks.
- First Aid and safeguarding certification.
What we offer
- Earning potential — competitive basic salary plus a significant performance bonus tied to club growth and member retention.
- Perks — complimentary Anytime Fitness membership, plus access to the global network of clubs.
- Development — ongoing sales and leadership training, and support towards further qualifications.
- Career growth — a genuine path to General Manager and multi-site leadership as we expand.
