Heavy Civil Construction Utility Superintendent

HB Construction, Inc. is seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Construction Utility Superintendent to oversee underground utility and excavation projects throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area.
This is a hands-on field leadership position responsible for coordinating crews, equipment, subcontractors, materials, and daily project activities. The Utility Superintendent must be able to lead work safely and efficiently, maintain project schedules, communicate effectively with project stakeholders, and operate equipment when necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily field operations for water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and other underground utility projects.
- Lead foremen, operators, laborers, subcontractors, and other field personnel.
- Review project plans, specifications, schedules, utility information, and scope requirements.
- Coordinate labor, equipment, materials, deliveries, inspections, and subcontractor activities.
- Ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to project plans, specifications, and quality standards.
- Monitor production, job progress, labor hours, equipment usage, quantities, and project conditions.
- Identify potential delays, conflicts, change conditions, and safety concerns and communicate them promptly.
- Conduct daily planning meetings and clearly communicate work assignments and production expectations.
- Coordinate with the General Superintendent, Project Manager, owners, inspectors, engineers, and other project representatives.
- Ensure required daily reports, timekeeping, production records, equipment inspections, and project documentation are accurate and completed on time.
- Enforce company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and project-specific safety procedures.
- Maintain organized, professional, and secure jobsites.
- Promote accountability, teamwork, proper equipment care, and professional conduct.
- Assist with excavation, grading, pipe installation, equipment operation, and other field activities when needed.
- Perform other duties and project assignments as required.
Required Qualifications
- At least five years of progressively responsible heavy civil, underground utility, or excavation construction experience.
- Previous experience leading utility crews as a superintendent, foreman, or comparable field leader.
- Strong knowledge of waterline, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, excavation, trenching, backfill, compaction, and site restoration.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, utility drawings, grade information, and project schedules.
- Knowledge of trench safety, confined-space requirements, competent-person responsibilities, and underground utility safety practices.
- Strong leadership, planning, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple crews, priorities, and changing jobsite conditions.
- Experience using HCSS HeavyJob or comparable construction field-management software.
- OSHA 30 certification or ability to obtain it within the timeframe established by the company.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel to project locations throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area and work outside the area when business needs require.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, or changing schedules when required by project operations.
- Ability and willingness to operate heavy equipment and assist crews when necessary.

Physical and Work Requirements
This position regularly works outdoors in active construction environments and may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, dust, noise, traffic, uneven terrain, and moving equipment. The employee must be able to walk jobsites, climb into and out of equipment, lift and carry materials, and perform field-related duties safely, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Pay: $80,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
